Half Marathon Training Week #1

18 Jun

Knowing my first half marathon of the Fall season was coming, I wanted to be prepared. So a week and a half ago I put together my training schedule. I put together our plan using Hal Higdon’s Novice 2 schedule. The Novice 2 schedule is a 4-days a week running schedule. I really don’t do well with back-to-back running days so I dropped a day settling on 3 running days a week. I also plan to keep up CrossFit 2-3x a week which given the fact we run during class, I don’t feel that bad about dropping a run day. I had the whole schedule set and then I remembered I do better when I extend the schedule. The Novice 2 schedule typically increases the long run day each week by a mile.  I do better when I extend it half a mile each week and extending the length of the training schedule from 12 weeks to 18 weeks.

imageThen I plugged in the actual dates… and realized the schedule was starting in 2 days. Oy. On one hand I was dreading the start of training, but on the other hand I was secretly looking forward to it. I found myself looking up upcoming races to try and decide which one’s to add to my schedule.

Monday

3 mile run – 35 minutes 11:40 pace

I started Greys Anatomy from the first episode. I’ve seen several seasons but missed many along the way as well. Watching this while running surprisingly made the time speed by.

Tuesday

CrossFit

After a warm-up, we practiced some Turkish getups. For these, you lie on the ground on your back with a kettle bell in one hand which is raised straight up. You slowly stand up while keeping your kettle bell arm raised in the air. In case that makes no sense, you can watch a Turkish Get-Up Intro video on YouTube.

Next we got started with the WOD [aka Workout Of (the) Day]

3 rounds of

  • 400 meter run
  • 21 Burpees

We were told we were to complete this in 12 minutes or less. If we didn’t think we could do it fast enough, we should scale it down. Scaling down would mean doing less burpees. I started but was just wiped this day. (Probably because I ran the day before.) Since I was feeling sluggish, I actually scaled it down to 10 Burpees per round. Even with this, I still finished all 3 rounds in 12:37. So I made the time limit. I secretly wished I could stay for the next class after this. Although I was slow during the workout, I still had some gas left in my tank.

Our coach put together an extra optional workout called the Beach Bod WOD, so I took that on next.

4 rounds (12 reps, 9 reps, 6 reps, and 3 reps) of:

  • Kettlebell Swings
  • Wallballs
  • Situps

It was a nice tough workout. Definitely challenged me!

Wednesday

Rest day so I could check out Spirit of the Marathon II for it’s one-night only showing!

Thursday

2.5 mile run – 32 minutes 12:44 pace

I was heading out to meet a friend for dinner, so I squeezed in a quick 2.5 mile run on the dreadmill.

Friday

Rest Day! Took the day off to rest the legs and met Adam for dinner at 4 Rivers Smokehouse.

Saturday

2 mile run + CrossFit

We tried to hit the UNF trails for our first long run of the schedule, 4 miles,  but the whole place was flooded. We ran the sidewalk around campus instead which was only a 2 mile run. By that time we were running short on time, so we had to head out.

We drove south to Mickler’s Landing for a Beach WOD with CrossFit 904! There we did a little bit of running and some team exercises on the beach. It was a lot of fun and surprisingly not that hot. There was a nice breeze on the beach.

Sunday

We took another rest day, so we could get up early and hit the water!

photo (1)

Yup, a morning of Bass fishing that started with us getting up at 5 am. The rest of the day was spent prepping food for the week, cleaning, and relaxing.

With that, Week 1 was in the books!

National Running Day

6 Jun

Even though yesterday I had to leave the house early (6:30 am early), work all day, and even worked an hour and a half late, I managed to get my run on. On a normal day, there’s no way I’d get on the treadmill at 7;30 pm at night, but yesterday wasn’t just any ol’ day.

944504_10100484841136522_781559096_n

It was National Running Day!

I hopped on the treadmill and cranked out 3 miles. When I was done, I was hangry, but happy.

I hadn’t watched Tuesday’s episode of Extreme Weight Loss yet, so I cranked up the Treadmill and the Tivo and set out on a 3 mile run. Surprisingly, it felt like it went pretty fast. The show kept me pretty entertained and the time flew by!

If you celebrated National Running Day, how far did you run? If not, did you walk, bike, or run? I’d love to hear it!

Timed Exercise 2012

11 Oct

ack! I moved the Timed Exercise page. Please visit it here!

Thank you for visiting!!!

Yes, I’m bat a*** crazy…

3 Aug

…and I’m dragging Adam down with me. We (along with 10 other people) signed up to run the Ragnar Relay Florida Keys.

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

The Ragnar relay is a 12 person running relay (unless your REALLY bada*** then it’s just a 6 person relay..which I’m not THAT crazy…yet… ) from one destination to another that’s typically around 200 miles. In our case, we will be running from Miami Beach to Key West which is exactly 199 miles. (You think they could tack on one more mile for an even 200… but after all that running, I’m not sure we’ll really give a rats a*** if it’s 199 or 200…) You don’t each run all 200 miles together in a big group run. You split it up into a variety of pre-determined (determined by the Ragnar peeps) lengths. The route has a total of 36 running legs with each person running 3 legs each. Each leg of the race is anywhere from 3 miles to 12 miles long. Adding up all three running legs each teammate will complete AROUND 20 miles total in a 36 hour period. Some more, some less. And yes, you read that right. It will take around 36 hours for the entire team to complete the race. Here’s the breakdown of the running legs (click the image to go to the actual link):

So in case you missed it.. we’re going to run.. and then run some more.. and then run a few more miles after that.

I’ve been drooling over this race for over 2 years….

I ALMOST signed up for a random team last year (there are alwars teams that need extra runners last minute) until I got the whole Achilles Tendinitis thing. Ugh. (Preventing that from happening again? Proper, consistent training. I do believe I’ve learned a lot from a year ago…but that’s a whole post for another day.)

If you have any questions about anything I didn’t explain well enough here, comment below or email me! I’m happy to explain what I can!

Oh, and I almost forgot one of the most important pieces of information!

Our team name: Chuck Norris Never Ragnar’d.

So… on January 4 and 5th.. I’ll be running from Miami Beach to Key West. I’ve never EVER been to Key West, so I really couldn’t be more excited.

and.. uh.. we have an opening… technically only have 11 teammates confirmed…. you in?

Will Run For Beer!

21 Jun

The last race organized by Personal Running Solutions (PRS) had me gagging the whole way through at the Krispy Kreme Challenge.  Thankfully I have a feeling I’ll be much, MUCH happier (as will my stomach) at the next event.

The PRS/Bold City Beer Run Series. This event pretty much is screaming my name!

In fact, this race isn’t actually just a race, it’s a SERIES of races that they’re going to coordinate on the last Thursday of every month.  If you can’t make this race, there will be several more in the next few months.

Overall, for just $5, you get to run a 5k race AND a free beer at Bold City.  (For you math nerds, this means the Beer is $3 and the race is $2.)  For an extra $25, you can snag a t-shirt so you can remember you actually did this event after you drink a few too many post-race at Bold City.

It looks like it’s going to be a really laid back and chill race that’s limited to around 100 total runners. Plus the first place male and female in each age group will get a special beer mug and the overall male and female winners will get a Bold Jug filled with their beer of choice from Bold City. (Psst…ask for a Duke of Whales)

If you’re a fan of beer (especially Bold City beer) and running, check this event out.

Running Streak with Runners World 2012

9 Jun

Who doesn’t need a kick in the pants to get off the couch and get movin’ sometimes? I know it doesn’t do me any harm. That’s why when I heard Runner’s World Magazine was hosting a Running Streak, I decided to join in.

For this “personal challenge”, I will each run at least one mile every day from Memorial Day to the Fourth of July. Some days I’ll run more. It all depends on my training schedule. I will try to squeeze in at least one mile every day at the bare minimum.

“Run at least one mile per day, every day, starting on Memorial Day (Monday, 5/28) and ending on Independence Day (Wednesday, 7/4). That’s 38 consecutive days of running. ”

You can read about all the details on the Runner’s World website.

Here’s where I’ll keep track of my runs. Feel free to revisit this page to see my daily updates (or avoid it entirely of you think this is silly pants or a snooze-fest).

Want to join in? Send me the link to your blog you’re keeping track of your runs on, and I’ll list you here too! Feel free to join me on any of my runs too! It’s only a mile minimum, but it’s always nice to have a friend to run with. You never know, we just might have so much fun, we’ll run 2-3 miles.

Saturday, June 9 – 1.1 miles run walk w/ the doogie!
Friday, June 8 – Scheduling issues #fail
Thursday, June 7 – Rain issues #fail
Wednesday, June 6 – Needed to give my legs a break. #fail
Tuesday, June 5 – 2.25 miles (legs are still dead)
Monday, June 4 – 1 mile 12:41 (whew! my legs are fried from the weekend!)
Sunday, June 3 – 1 mile 10:20
Saturday, June 2 – Hale and Hearty 7k 4.3 miles 55:45
Friday, June 1 – Krispy Kreme Challenge 3.1 Miles 52:33
Thursday, May 31 – 3 miles 33:32
Wednesday, May 30 – 1 mile 11:11
Tuesday, May 29 – 1 mile 12:00
Monday, May 28 – I learned about this too late so I didn’t start officially until the next day. I’ll squeeze in an extra run later on to make up for it.

Other Streakers:

National Running Day! Plus Fall & Spring Tentative Race Schedule

6 Jun

To celebrate National Running Day (and the fact I’ve been allergy free for over a month now), I decided to plan out my Fall & Spring running schedule.  What really triggered this was that the Rock n Roll races are offering a $20 discount today.  I was debating back and forth about signing up for the Savannah Half (which would still be $85 after the $25 discount), but ultimately decided against doing it.

I really want to train consistently and complete the Tri2B Tuff races in Jacksonville this year.  I tried to do it last year, but due to inconsistent training, I ended up getting injured on the Thanksgiving Day race. The year before, my job was just too crazy.  So those are my main three races, plus the Ragnar in January.  Then I’ve filled in several shorter favorite races I’ve either done in the past, or would like to do.. and bam. I’m super full now!  This actually looks a little crazy!

Upcoming Races:

Races On My Calendar: (Ones in bold are one’s I’m officially registered for)

August:

September:
October:
November:
December:
January:
February:
  • 9 – Pirates on the Run 10k
  • 17 - 26.2 with Donna (only the half marathon though)

What races are you looking forward to this Fall and Spring?

Just a Dozen…

1 Jun

Tonight I will eat 12 glazed Krispy Kreme donuts for charity at the Jax Inaugural Krispy Kreme Challenge.
When I tell people about this event, they exhibit a wide variety of reactions.

The first reaction I personally experienced was…

1 Donut = 242 calories

12 Donuts = 2904 calories

1 mile burns 100 calories (approx)

2904 calories = 29 miles!!

Miles run so far this week: 6 (600 calories)

Miles in the Krispy Kreme Challenge: 3 (300 calories)

Miles in the Hale and Hearty 7k Saturday: 4.3 (430 calories)

Miles on Sunday to continue Runners World Run Streak: 1 mile (100 calories)

Total miles currently scheduled to complete this week: 14.3 miles (1430 calories)

Additional miles I need to run on Sunday to break even: 29 miles – 14.3 miles  = 14.7 (1474 calories)

Gulp.

Weekly Recap Feb 13-19

19 Feb

Whew, another week. This year seems to be slipping away quickly!

Monday 2/13

Whew! Sunday I ran 8 miles of the Breast Cancer Half Marathon. I hadn’t been training at all, so I didn’t finish the whole thing. Regardless, I was pretty sore on Monday! Mostly around my ankles and shins. Really glad to be able to run again! As a result I took Monday morning off. Plus, on Monday, my allergies kicked into high gear! I spent the whole afternoon sneezing every :30-seconds. So frustrating. The sinus congestion was horrible.

Tuesday 2/14

Happy Valentine’s Day! Still suffered from allergies. Ridiculous. Seriously considering getting allergy shots. Anyone else get allergy shots? Any advice or doctor recommendations in Jax?

We celebrated Valentine’s Day with a nice dinner made at home.

Wednesday 2/15

20120220-093815.jpg

Timed: 323 calories
Almost able to do what resembles an actual dip!
Frustrated by the fact I had to mod the atomic situps. Just not strong enough and my form was struggling as a result.

I completed reps 21, 18, and almost all of 15 fully completing the sprawls.

After work we had our monthly Social Media Club Jacksonville meeting at Intuition, so I zipped on over there to get everything ready.

Thursday 2/16

Exhausted from a late night at SMCJAX, so I didn’t make it to t:e again. After work I zipped on over to Speckled Hen Tavern to meet up with some girlfriends for dinner before we headed to the Regal Avenues to see The Vow. Dinner was ok.  I think I just ordered the wrong stuff, but nothing on the menu was really reaching out to me.  As for the movie – What a tear jerker!

Friday 2/17

Had to go into work super early on Friday so no t:e today.  Thought about going after work, but it was such a rainy mess when I left.  I was really exhausted.  Adam had late duty all week, and wanted me to meet him out at Intuition.  Twist my arm!

Saturday 2/18

Whew. Busy day! Both Adam and I had to work in the morning for a few hours. We met up around 11 a.m. at First Watch in Mandarin. Afterwards, we came back to the townhouse and I passed out on the couch while he tested his new fishing reel out. I never nap, so this was really nice. I was exhausted. Afterwards we headed to the shooting range. I’ve never shot a gun before in my life, but it does seem like a necessary evil that I needed to learn. We spent about an hour at Bullseye which was surprisingly a nice place.

20120220-094248.jpg

After that we headed to the Yates YMCA for some Racquetball. Racquetball honestly sucked because my knee wasn’t playing along. I have arthritis in my knee, and it was really bothering me. Then we went home, hung out, relaxed and cooked dinner.

Sunday

Yay! Finally able to get a run in, we ran 4 miles at the Nocatee Greenway Trails which are quickly becoming my new favorite place to run.

Running the whole area is around 3 miles, it’s paved, quiet and fairly easy to get to.

Afterwards Adam got his hair cut while I zipped thru Publix shopping.

Then we hightailed it out to Tallahassee to have lunch with his mom to celebrate her birthday.

Made it back to Jacksonville around 8pm, quickly did chores and then crashed.

 Recap:

So overall, I would see this week as a fail.  It was just a wonky week since I was super sore from the race on Sunday and then just too busy. My goal each week is to make it to t:e 3x a week, which didn’t happen.  I also want to start training by completing two mid-week shorter runs and one long run on Sunday.

Timed Exercise: 3x

Running: 3x

 Goals for Feb 20-26:

  • Timed Exercise 3x
  • 2-3 Short Runs
  • 1 Long Run

I love racing season!

1 Nov

Anyone signed up for either of these?

November 12 - Native Sun Mandarin 10k

This will be my second time running this. Last time I did it in 1 hour 4 minutes (or something like that).  I’ll be shocked if I run this THAT fast. whew!

November 24 – Subaru Half Marathon (Yup, Turkey Day!)

This will be my second Subaru Classic – but only my first time doing the half. Two years ago I did the 6k.

December 18 – Jax Bank Half Marathon

This is my second Jax Bank!  My first half marathon ever, this one is special!

February 14 – 26.2 with Donna Half Marathon

This is the second time running the Donna – last time was 2 years ago in a relay!

February 24 – Rugged Maniac

This will be my third mud run, but my first Rugged Maniac. I ran the MS Mud Run Jax in 2010 and 2011.

I’m apparently crazy and have seemed to actually register for each of these!

Seriously, what’s on your upcoming race calendar? I love running season!
