Half Marathon Training Week #1

18 Jun

Knowing my first half marathon of the Fall season was coming, I wanted to be prepared. So a week and a half ago I put together my training schedule. I put together our plan using Hal Higdon’s Novice 2 schedule. The Novice 2 schedule is a 4-days a week running schedule. I really don’t do well with back-to-back running days so I dropped a day settling on 3 running days a week. I also plan to keep up CrossFit 2-3x a week which given the fact we run during class, I don’t feel that bad about dropping a run day. I had the whole schedule set and then I remembered I do better when I extend the schedule. The Novice 2 schedule typically increases the long run day each week by a mile.  I do better when I extend it half a mile each week and extending the length of the training schedule from 12 weeks to 18 weeks.

imageThen I plugged in the actual dates… and realized the schedule was starting in 2 days. Oy. On one hand I was dreading the start of training, but on the other hand I was secretly looking forward to it. I found myself looking up upcoming races to try and decide which one’s to add to my schedule.

Monday

3 mile run – 35 minutes 11:40 pace

I started Greys Anatomy from the first episode. I’ve seen several seasons but missed many along the way as well. Watching this while running surprisingly made the time speed by.

Tuesday

CrossFit

After a warm-up, we practiced some Turkish getups. For these, you lie on the ground on your back with a kettle bell in one hand which is raised straight up. You slowly stand up while keeping your kettle bell arm raised in the air. In case that makes no sense, you can watch a Turkish Get-Up Intro video on YouTube.

Next we got started with the WOD [aka Workout Of (the) Day]

3 rounds of

  • 400 meter run
  • 21 Burpees

We were told we were to complete this in 12 minutes or less. If we didn’t think we could do it fast enough, we should scale it down. Scaling down would mean doing less burpees. I started but was just wiped this day. (Probably because I ran the day before.) Since I was feeling sluggish, I actually scaled it down to 10 Burpees per round. Even with this, I still finished all 3 rounds in 12:37. So I made the time limit. I secretly wished I could stay for the next class after this. Although I was slow during the workout, I still had some gas left in my tank.

Our coach put together an extra optional workout called the Beach Bod WOD, so I took that on next.

4 rounds (12 reps, 9 reps, 6 reps, and 3 reps) of:

  • Kettlebell Swings
  • Wallballs
  • Situps

It was a nice tough workout. Definitely challenged me!

Wednesday

Rest day so I could check out Spirit of the Marathon II for it’s one-night only showing!

Thursday

2.5 mile run – 32 minutes 12:44 pace

I was heading out to meet a friend for dinner, so I squeezed in a quick 2.5 mile run on the dreadmill.

Friday

Rest Day! Took the day off to rest the legs and met Adam for dinner at 4 Rivers Smokehouse.

Saturday

2 mile run + CrossFit

We tried to hit the UNF trails for our first long run of the schedule, 4 miles,  but the whole place was flooded. We ran the sidewalk around campus instead which was only a 2 mile run. By that time we were running short on time, so we had to head out.

We drove south to Mickler’s Landing for a Beach WOD with CrossFit 904! There we did a little bit of running and some team exercises on the beach. It was a lot of fun and surprisingly not that hot. There was a nice breeze on the beach.

Sunday

We took another rest day, so we could get up early and hit the water!

photo (1)

Yup, a morning of Bass fishing that started with us getting up at 5 am. The rest of the day was spent prepping food for the week, cleaning, and relaxing.

With that, Week 1 was in the books!

4 Rivers Smokehouse

17 Jun

IMG_2255-2575560978-O

Now when I first heard 4 Rivers Smokehouse was coming to Jacksonville from Orlando, my first thoughts were “Oh great. Another bbq place?” We have Bonos, MOJOs, Monroe’s, Woodys, Driftwood, Jenkins, Sonny’s, The Pig, Sticky Fingers, Treemendous, Up In Smoke, Cattlemen’s, Shanes, and more.

As it got closer to 4 Rivers opening now that it was on my radar, I kept hearing people not just talk about it, but rave about it. Honestly, even with several people raving about it, my expectations weren’t that high. I expected the same quality I’ve had time and time again.

Boy, was I wrong.

IMG_2250-2575558481-O

When you first arrive, you are greeted with the corrals to wait in line. It was incredibly busy when we went Friday around 6:30 pm. I heard it was even busier Saturday at dinner (rumor has it the line went outside and around the building). Now, typically when a new place opens in Jacksonville, it is quite busy for the first month or two but then it does down. Looking at the length of their corral line, 4 Rivers does not expect things to be dying down anytime soon.

IMG_2254-2575560485-O

When you first show up, you pick your entrée then your sides. They have quite an array of sides. Cornbread Salad, Fried Pickles, Mac & Cheese, Baked Cheese Grits, Smoked Jalapenos, BBQ Beans, Potato Salad, Corn, French Fries, Southern Green Beans, Collards, Coleslaw, Fried Okra, Texas Cornbread, Sweet Potato Casserole, and Bread Pudding.

IMG_2249-2575558173-O

The seating area is really simple. There’s several community tables available and a few booths.

IMG_2245-2575556625-O

For my entrée, I ordered a Classic Dinner Plate with Smokehouse Turkey (warm) which came with 3 sides and a biscuit. For my sides, I had to try their Mac & Cheese. I also ordered the bacon wrapped cream cheese stuffed jalapenos and bread pudding.Oof. It was a ridiculous amount of food!

IMG_2246-2575557107-O

Adam ordered a Classic Dinner plate with pulled pork and prime rib and his sides were Mac & Cheese, Sweet Potatoes, and Collards.

The turkey was incredible. I’ve never had turkey at a BBQ joint that was actually moist, not dry. It was honestly the best I’ve had (that wasn’t home made).

The Mac & Cheese and the biscuit were both a huge disappointment. The Mac was watery and nothing special. The cheese didn’t seem real. I was really expecting a nice fluffy, flaky biscuit. It was actually chewy. Hmm.

I honestly didn’t realize I’d eaten the bread pudding until it was gone… it was that good. The bacon wrapped jalapenos were really good too. There must have been a seed in the second one still because wheeeew it was spicy!

IMG_2248-2575557779-O

It was at this time, I looked up and realized there was a Sweet Shop in the corner. That was a surprise! I saw tons of people walk by mesmerized.

IMG_2252-2575559396-O

Wow. What a spread!!

IMG_2253-2575559943-O

I want to try one of everything (unless it has shredded coconut on it). Yummo!

Have you tried 4 Rivers Smokehouse yet? What’d you think?

WOD 6-8 Jump Around!

14 Jun

You just never know what to expect with a Saturday workout. This day, when I first walked in, THE BOARD WAS BLANK. I didn’t know if this was a good thing or a bad thing. Does this mean he hasn’t even planned the workout for the day or does this mean it’s so bad, he doesn’t want to write it up on the board until everyone arrives…

photo 4

Finally, Josh walked up and wrote some stuff on the board. I saw Lateral Bounds which I wasn’t familiar with and saw a lot of 100’s under the days WOD.  I basically ignored the WOD and just focused on the Lateral Bounds, which I quickly became real familiar with.

photo 1

Doesn’t look entirely safe, but surprisingly didn’t move hardly at all. Essentially you stood on one side and jumped sideways over the two white PVC pipes then jumped back to where you started. The goal was to do so without pausing at any point.

I joined a group off to the side that seemed to be about my same intensity. We started with the PVC pipes just lying on the ground and each took a turn jumping back and returning. With my knees, this was the exact warm-up I needed. Once everyone completed that with no problem, we sandwiched each PVC pipe between a set of weights to raise it up. Everyone took a turn jumping through. Then we raised them up again slightly higher. Jump. Rinse. Repeat. I thought this method worked well for me personally. I was surprised how high I was ultimately able to jump. We ended up raising it about mid thigh height by the end. I can’t remember exactly how high it was anymore, but it was definitely challenging.

photo 2

The other teams in our box were getting really intense with this exercise. On the tallest end, the Rogue boxes measure 30” (the height of an average dining table FYI). They had the boxes on the highest end with the PVC pipes balanced on top of plates to make it even HIGHER! (The above picture is not on the highest side) It was incredible to watch how high some people can jump. The PVC pipe was at waist height for several people and guys AND girls still cleared it. That’s impressive!

photo 3

After all that, it was time for the WOD. We partnered up. I ended up partnering with a new girl, Lauren, which was a lot of fun. She was there to check out the gym for the first time. Did you know your first workout at CrossFit 904 is free?

So we set up different stations in the gym. One for Ground to Overhead, another for medball situps, and a third for Jumping Squats.

We did the medball situps with a 12# ball. The Jumping Squats were actually done while holding a kettlebell at your chest. I think I used a 12# kettlebell for this. I was going to do a higher weight (this was the smallest weight available) but with the jumps added into the squat, this was killer! The last exercise, the Ground to Overhead I used a 15# weight. I had high hopes and started with the 35# only to drop down to reality after a few reps.

The count was 100 – but it was split between you and your partner, so each teammate only had to do 50 each. We actually chose to scale down to 80 reps which was 40 reps each.

We split into 3 groups and got started. Each group couldn’t move forward to the next station until everyone in their entire group was done with their reps. Then there was some rule at the end that everyone had to do BURPEES for whatever reason. I completely missed why, I just know all of a sudden everyone had to do 18 burpees and it was a mass chaos burpee situation as everyone knocked these out as quickly as possible.

photo 5

Yup, it was a great way to start a Saturday. Next week’s Saturday team WOD is actually a beach WOD. Can’t wait to check that out!

Camping is Intense: Manatee Springs State Park

13 Jun

After the Gate River Run, we ran around the house in a frenzy packing like crazy. We decided to spend the night camping at Manatee Springs State Park with our friends, Thomas and Lauren, for a night away camping.

We had originally planned to bring the boat. In fact, we DID bring the boat. Shortly after we dropped Vegas off at Pet Paradise off of University Blvd. in Jacksonville, I called the campsite to get information for late arrival. I casually mentioned we were bringing a boat when we were surprised to hear that the Suwannee River was flooded and their boat ramp was closed. The park ranger explained we could launch our boat north of the park, but the Suwanee was running really fast, and it might be complicated. Hmmm. We returned home, dropped off the boat and headed out on the road again. Oops. We quickly turned around, dropped the boat back off at home and headed out. A few hours later we arrived at the Manatee Springs State Park at dusk.

IMG_9635

We quickly setup our tent before it got too dark. (Let’s just say it was a good thing we brought our headlamps from the Ragnar Relay) After we got setup, we started making dinner… that’s when I realized I’d forgotten both plates and silverware. Uhh. Oops? We figured things out, enjoyed dinner (with creative plate and silverware), and settled in around the fire.

IMG_9636

Each site came with it’s own campfire ring, which was nice. After a few hours relaxing around the fire, we all crashed for the night.

IMG_9638

When we woke up the next day, we had a brief tick scare. Adam found one crawling on his stomach when we got up in the morning. Yuck! We scrapped together breakfast and headed out to explore the rest of the camp ground. The first thing we found was the most unusual swing set. Have you ever seen one like this?

IMG_9640

Thomas tested the chair out first. It held steady, so we each took a turn after.

IMG_9644

IMG_9647

IMG_9650

Wheee!

IMG_9653

Kinda crazy that all around the swimming hole, they have these signs up. I’m not sure I’d feel exactly comfortable swimming here knowing there could be snakes all around. Eeesh.

IMG_9655

You can tell how high the water is in this picture!

IMG_9657

Here’s a crazy sign that they have indicating the different flood levels over the year. Check out how high 1948 is!

IMG_9659

They had nice boardwalks built throughout the trees and over the water. It really enabled us to walk out to areas we wouldn’t normally be able to see.

IMG_9661

Turtle, Turtle!

IMG_9666

Pretty interesting tree stump.

IMG_9667

The boardwalk led out to a dock on the Suwannee River. It really was quite a beautiful day.

IMG_9668

You know the place floods a lot when they have this river level indicator.

IMG_9670

IMG_9673

As we were leaving, we had the pleasure of seeing this lovely sign.

Some life lessons learned while on camping at the Manatee Springs State Park:

  • If you plan to bring your liquor remnants, store it in an old box of baby formula. No one’s going to look for liquor in there!
  • Plates are overrated. You can just as easily cut up a cardboard box (see “baby formula” box above…) and use that as plates.
  • Silverware is overrated. All you really need is two forks, and a spoon for 4 people.  If you’re hungry, you’ll manage. Trust me.
  • Don’t discount your camping neighbors for any missing supplies (plates?)
  • If you need to approach a neighbor to randomly borrow (Is it called borrowing if you don’t plan on returning?) any supplies (plates?), I highly recommend starting with the cute couple with the dachshund or a yorkie. Yes, I’m stereotyping, Yes, it worked on the first try.
  • If you show up past dark, showering is overrated since no one will remember what you were wearing when you arrived anyways.
  • Read the reviews on Yelp when picking a campground. I’m glad I didn’t bring my dog, since the one reviewer commented they found over 60 ticks on their dog. Sounds as though Adam got lucky only having found one!
  • Always triple check that everyone has the correct address for the location you’re going to. Adam thought we were originally going to a different campground with a very similar sounding name. That could have been bad.

Overall, we had an enjoyable experience at Manatee Springs State Park; although, the situation with the ticks was a bit unnerving, so I’m not sure we’ll go back. It’s OK though because there are SO many great campgrounds in Florida to visit.

WOD 6/1 It’s a boy!

12 Jun

photo 1

Today’s WOD was a special workout designed by one of our trainers to celebrate the our coach, Josh, and his wife, Wendy, who are expecting a baby soon.

photo 2 (2)

Before we got into the WOD, we got a good warm-up in.

photo 1 (2)

So for fun, we did 9 exercises which represented 9 months of gestation. We grouped those 9 exercises into 3 groups to represent 3 trimesters. To top it off, we did 40 reps of each exercise to represent the number of weeks one is pregnant. How fun, right?

photo 4

Even the exercises were ‘pregnancy’ themed. Each ‘trimester’ started out with a  run… where we also had to carry a medicine ball. We didn’t just carry it though, we carried it low in front… juuust like someone pregnant might hold their belly. That was interesting! Instead of situps, we did birthing situps. Lol!

photo 5

What made it even more fun was Wendy joined us for all the workouts (but she didn’t need to carry a medicine ball – she has her own!)

photo 2 (3)

I worked out in a team with Danielle & Bill who I was surprised to learn were married! I find it hilarious how many people I meet at CrossFit individually only to learn later are married – like Josh and Wendy!

Dishcrawl Jax – Riverside

11 Jun

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to check out Dishcrawl Jacksonville on their second tour of the city. Each time they have an event, it tours a different part of town. This month’s haunt of choice was Riverside.

IMG_1711-2461620042-O

Each Dishcrawl event visits 4 restaurants within walking distance where you get to sample a few signature items from that restaurant. In advance of the event, you know what part of town the event will occur, but you don’t know which restaurants you will be visiting aside from the first restaurant the group meets at.

Restaurant 1

IMG_1704-2461617618-O

Our tour was in Riverside, so we met up at Tapa That. I really like this restaurant. I’ve been here a few times; once for ‘girls night’ and another time with the whole group.

IMG_1713-2461620503-O

It’s interesting because their menu changes frequently. In fact, they don’t even print menus – they just update the chalkboard on the wall.

Note to self: check out the bottomless mimosas on Sundays.

IMG_1717-2461621556-O

We had a decent sized group so Tapa That had pre-arranged two long areas of tables. While Tapa that was open to the public while we were there, there really weren’t many other seating options left.

IMG_1718-2461621909-O

I grabbed a beer while we waited. Beverages are not included in the cost of the Dishcrawl Ticket, so your own your own there. Just make sure you remember to cash out in time before everyone’s ready to leave.

IMG_1720-2461622709-O

At each stop. we received a personal introduction from one of the owners before we got started which was a nice touch.

IMG_1721-2461623217-O

IMG_1722-2461623566-O

Love the couch area in the back. It’s a great spot for a‘night out w/ the girls’ and a glass of wine.

IMG_1724-2461624194-O

Our entrée consisted of a Roasted Veggie Salad with Herb Goat Cheese, Vegan Friendly Olive Tapenade and Dukes Slow Cooked Chicken Taco. All was really delicious and something I would not have ordered traditionally.

IMG_1726-2461624744-O

As you can see, we hated everything. Ha! Once everyone had finished, we headed out to find our second unknown destination.

Restaurant 2

IMG_1727-2461625062-O

As we walked up the street, we passed several restaurants without going in. I was getting really curious as to where we were heading.

IMG_1729-2461625701-O

Especially once we passed the two churches. I knew at this point, there really wasn’t much of ANYTHING passed here within walking distance. Where in the world were were going?!

IMG_1730-2461626188-O

Ah ha! I had not been expecting a food truck on our tour, but was pleased to see it. Especially since Adam hadn’t had a chance to try this food truck yet.

IMG_1740-2461629316-O

The Happy Grilled Cheese is owned by a great guy named Anthony.

IMG_1733-2461627476-O

I had the chance to visit it on opening day, and it was good. I was looking forward to checking it out again and possibly some different menu items.

IMG_1735-2461627962-O

We were served the All American Melt which is bacon, tomato and American cheese with a side of their Tomato Bisque and homemade potato chips.

IMG_1737-2461628487-O

Adam immediately dunked his chips into the soup. Last time I visited, I tried their beer cheese soup. I have to say this tomato gives the beer cheese a good challenge. As a kid, I looked forward to nights when we had grilled cheese and tomato soup for lunch or dinner. This definitely brought back good memories of that.

IMG_1741-2461629582-O

Mmm. Look at all that cheesy goodness!

After everyone finished up here, we headed out to our third stop of the evening. We ended up walking back to where we’d come from and then some.

Restaurant 3

IMG_1748-2461631898-O

The third stop? O’Brother’s Irish Bar. This could be interesting.

IMG_1758-2461635023-O

It’s always a surprise to come inside and actually have room to move around. I’ve only typically been here for St. Patrick’s Day when it’s absolutely slammed!

IMG_1752-2461633067-O

Just like the previous two stops, we had an overview from a member of the staff.

IMG_1753-2461633358-O

We started things out with Corned Beef and Cabbage with Mashed Potatoes,

IMG_1754-2461633804-O

A side of their Guinness Mac n Cheese

IMG_1756-2461634357-O

and a legit Scotch Egg! I’ve only had a scotch egg once before (at the 2012 Slow Food First Coast – I hope they do another one soon!) and it was interesting. This only further solidified my love of scotch eggs. So interesting! I would say the corned beef and Scotch egg were the two most surprisingly tasty of this stop.

Finally, everyone was ready to roll over (literally) to the final stop of the night.

Restaurant 4

IMG_1762-2461636338-O

Near by, we walked into Derby on Park. I’ve actually never been to this restaurant before.

IMG_1768-2461638757-O

We began with an introduction from the owner.

IMG_1770-2461639804-O

Top left is Key Lime pie, the right is Carrot Cake and the bottom left is Double Chocolate Brownie. Whew. These were so incredible. I really wished I wasn’t so full by this point, because the Key Lime pie was spot on. If I were to face plant anything the entire evening, this would be my pick!

IMG_1771-2461640086-O

Every spoon full was seriously delicious.

IMG_1757-2461634650-O

We really had a great time on Dishcrawl. These events would be great for a unique date night out or for a whole group of friends. It’s definitely something different and offers a unique perspective on some local restaurants. Considering everything you get to try and the amount of food, the cost of the event is worth it too. I look forward to more of these in the near future!

WOD 5-31 – EMOM Snatch & Double Unders

11 Jun

photo 3

Yay! Another day of CrossFit! I was looking forward to today’s class when I looked up the workout the night before on the website. We started with a good warm-up of a short run, jump rope and then some stretching with the PVC pipe.

photo 2

We reviewed the movements and finally it was time for the workout! Today was my first EMOM which stands for Every Minute On the Minute. On the odd minutes, we did 3 snatch exercises. On the even minute, we did 20 double unders. I actually did 40 regular jump ropes since I haven’t mastered the double unders yet… or even a single one.

The goal was to complete your 3 snatches or jump ropes in :30-seconds so you had the rest of the time (:30-seconds) to rest.

photo 4

It was surprisingly not that hard of a workout, and I felt I completed everything fairly easy. I think if I were to do this workout again, I’d definitely go up in weight on the snatches.

WOD 5-29 Holdin’ On

10 Jun

I was looking forward to today’s WOD because it included a skill I’d already spent time on… The 5 Rep Max for Deadlifts. I was looking forward to returning to a skill to see if I’d improved any over the past few weeks.

Plus earlier in the day I saw a great, motivational post on Facebook by my friend, Stephanie, saying how proud she was of herself for her recent fitness successes. In the post she mentioned some of her progress including her 1 rep max for Deadlifts. This girl is in beat mode, let me tell you! Well seeing as her weight was so much higher than mine, it sparked the competitive demon in me to really try hard at tonight’s WOD (even though I know I’m not ready to come close to her accomplishments… but that’s okay in my book).

photo 1

We got things started with a warm-up. Inch Worms are sorta awkward to me. In case you’re not familiar, here’s what an inch worm is.

photo 2

For the Skill/Strength part of the workout, we jumped right into finding out our 5 RM Deadlift. For this I started with the 45# bar with a 10# weight and slowly added weight. I am thrilled to say I increased my 5 RM Deadlift from 135# to 150#! I also think I could have done a bit more (maybe 5-10# more), but I actually ran out of time! Can’t wait to do these again soon. It’s always exciting when you see progress!

photo 3

I really liked our WOD. The Farmer’s carry was a fast walk with a 10# weight in each hand. We had to hold them at our sides one plate per hand. Sounds easy, but it got really hard by the third round. My hands started cramping, and I realized this was specifically to help strengthen our grip. The strict Press wasn’t a big deal. The 20 burpees were challenging (but for some reason, I sorta like these now. They aren’t as tough as they used to be).

photo 4

I really felt I worked my butt off at this workout. It was really humid too. I was shocked when I was not only the first girl to finish, but the first person to finish. Either that means I really worked hard, or I didn’t do a high enough weight. I really felt as though I did the whole way through. I know this is sorta silly since we’re really just competing against our individual selves, but it is nice to finish first once in a while.

National Donut Day

7 Jun

For the two people that read my blog (besides me, I don’t count), you probably just cringed. I went right from National Running Day to National Donut Day. Kinda thinking now these two days should be reversed…

Since today is National Donut Day, you can enjoy a free donut of your choice (while supplies last) with any beverage purchase (any size or style) at Dunkin’ Donuts today only.

Plus Dunkin is celebrating on Twitter with a National Donut Day Twitter Sweepstakes. Follow @DunkinDonuts on Twitter. They’ll be tweeting a name and image of several innovative donut creations from around the world. Guess the country where the donut is available using the hashtag #DDonut to enter to win a $50 Dunkin’ donuts mGift. They’ll be awarding six total throughout the day. That’s a fun way to celebrate!

I, along with a good handful of other North Florida based bloggers, was invited to celebrate early yesterday at Dunkin Donuts. I am a huge fan of Dunkin Donuts, but I’m really all about the coffee. Enough, in fact, it’s what I brew at home even! When it comes to the food, I enjoy a bagel about once a month, and it’s usually just a plain bagel with plain cream cheese. Craziness!

Speaking of coffee, I started things off with a one of my own.

img_2140

And they brought out samples of their Baskin Robins mint chocolate chip flavored coffee. It was good, but I don’t care for flavored coffee. I don’t even like pumpkin coffee.

img_2142

We tried the turkey sausage breakfast sandwich.  (They gave us a small portion of it, not the whole sandwich. Thank god!)

img_2144

They have some new Bakery Sandwiches including the Ranch Bacon Chicken Sandwich. This was surprisingly good. I was expecting overpowering ranch flavors, but it was mild and blended in just as it should.

img_2146

We sampled a few of their frozen drinks, but I was a fan of their iced hot chocolate. This would be delicious after a hot, long run!

img_2147

They’ve also released new Summer Fruit Donuts to celebrate the season. This is the Lemonade donut. Looks so innocent…

img_2150

…until you bite into it and BAM! Lemonade flavoring. With the icing and toppings, it was more than just lemon flavored, it blended together to taste like lemonade. Very sweet!

img_2148

Their other Summer Fruit Donut is the Key Lime. This was definitely my favorite of the two because o the graham cracker topping.

img_2151

Of course their latest craze is their Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich which is a new permanent addition to the menu. Surprisingly only 360 calories, it features a fried egg and two slices of bacon between a sliced glazed donut. If you’re into salty/sweet combos, this MAY be for you. Some people from the group LOVED THIS, other’s weren’t sold on it. It didn’t seem as though anyone hated it though.

img_2152

Cross-section of the Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich.

img_2153

I was surprised (but yet, not surprised) to hear Dunkin occasionally gets special requests for parties, weddings and such. (It seems they make quite a few grooms cakes!) This fun creation was for a recent event. Check it out! A chocolate glazed donut inside of a sliced glazed donut with clever frosting to make it look like a burger! Too funny!

img_2155

I brought an extra one of these into work afterwards, and everyone thought it was hilarious.

img_2156

And of course, several Dunkin Donuts share space with Baskin Robins so an ice cream cake appeared! I absolutely LOVE ice cream cakes! Baskin Robins has some of the best too. I learned you can actually get custom ice cream cakes made however you want including the insides. If you want it all chocolate with sprinkles and no cake, they can do that. If you want half cake, half ice cream, you can specify the flavors for the cake and the ice cream. The only thing they ask is for 24-48 hours notice, though they’ll do what they can to make it work whenever possible.

Does the Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich sound yummy or gross to you? Would you have the guts to try it? If you do, let me know what you think!

Black Hog Farm-To-Door

7 Jun

I’ve been curious about the Black Hog Farm-to-Door program for quite a while. Recently a few friends of mine started the program (Megan, Lana, I’m lookin’ at you!), so I pulled up their website to learn a bit about it.

Black Hog is a local, North Florida based farm which offers all sorts of fruits, vegetables, eggs and proteins for sale.

Deliveries can include:

  • Fresh Produce
  • Free Range Chicken
  • Fresh farm Eggs
  • Naturally Raised Heritage Pork (including Berkshire, Tamworth and Large Black)
  • Naturally raised pastured Beef
  • Other quality local, regional and fresh Black Hog Farm approved products

Plus, they offer a subscription based program. You can subscribe to receive items on a weekly every-other-week or even specific week basis. They also offer a Farmer Box which is a random collection of fruits and veggies. You can pay a few bucks more and actually select up to 10 items to have in your box.

While it’s called Farm-to-Door, they don’t actually deliver to your door. It was a bit unclear. It sounds like it was a program that they’re no longer accepting new clients for and they’re phasing it out. Now the program has evolved so you pickup your order on a designated day at the local YMCA. On Sunday I signed up for the every-other-week Farmers Box, and today was my pickup day. After work I headed to Brooks YMCA and picked up my selection of goods. (Actually I drove halfway home then I remembered, drove back and picked up my box.)

Update 6/14/2013

My friend emailed Black Hog for information on her own and they told her the following.

We are still doing Farm to Door home delivery to most areas of Jacksonville. The pick up at your local Y does allows you to have more choices in customizing your order by using our new web site. Home delivery Members from the intercostal east are also able to order off the site. All other home delivery orders are made by email.

When I got home, I explored my goods. I had selected to order a dozen eggs, 1 pound breakfast sausage and 1 pound ground beef. Plus I ordered a Farmers Choice box. I was feeling risky on Sunday when I submitted my order, so I let Black Hog decide what to send me. I didn’t give them any specifications on what to leave out, but you do have the option. Here’s what came in my box:

  • 1 small butternut squash
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 4 peaches
  • 4 oranges
  • 1 bag romaine
  • 3 large carrots
  • 1 bag spinach
  • 1 yellow onion
  • 1 bag mushrooms

Ha! I’m actually allergic to mushrooms. Oops. Regardless, I’d say for $25, I got a pretty good box. The ground beef, sausage and eggs were extra.

Have you ever ordered a protein/produce delivery like this?
